Certificate Information

What is an SSL certificate?
SSL certificates are used to conduct secure transactions across the Internet.
When connecting to a server, the certificate is used to confirm that the destination "is who they say they are".

For example, a certificate for "www.revolutionhosting.net" from a trusted Certificate Authority assures that you are actually connecting to our website, and not someone else (fake/fraudulent website).

This gives anyone accessing your site a high degree of confidence both in the security of your transactions and the identity of your website. Back to Top

Why do I need an SSL certificate?
If you're accepting any kind of sensitive information through your website, or operate any kind of service where customer confidence is a concern, your customers will want assurances that their details are both secure in transit, and that they are interacting with a company that a third-party has verified as genuine.

Before interacting with your website, customers look for the trusted "padlock" icon in their browser or device, and at the known company name on a "site seal".

While SSL certificates from any vendor (including those you create yourself) can offer secure connections, our RapidSSL certificates provide the lowest-cost, trusted single-root certificate, and GeoTrust offers competitively priced single-root certificates from a well-known authority.
This offers verification from a name your customers trust, and prevents any embarrassing "not trusted" prompts to your customers and users. Back to Top

What's the difference between RapidSSL and QuickSSL?
The main difference is in the company backing each certificate.

RapidSSL allows for perfectly secure and trusted connections, although the name of the company behind it is not as well known by online consumers.

This is fine for smaller internet stores, but larger customers will want to look at GeoTrust's QuickSSL for their more recognizable and trusted name, along with the GeoTrust "site seal" that can be displayed on your website.
In addition, QuickSSL Premium certificates are also trusted across all major mobile devices (PDAs and Smartphones). Back to Top

Which certificate should I choose for my website?
RapidSSL is suitable for non-payment services, such as e-mail/FTP/etc, as well as smaller internet stores with "light" levels of e-commerce.

QuickSSL provides the same protection and browser recognition, but from a more trusted company name: GeoTrust. This offers the best balance of price and customer confidence for most small to medium-size internet stores.

QuickSSL Premium offers additional recognition with mobile devices such as PDAs and Smartphones, as well as the GeoTrust seal on your website.

You should select the certificate that best fits your customer confidence needs, while remaining within your budget. Back to Top

Who is the CA (Certificate Authority) for your certificates?
The certificate authority is "Equifax Secure Certificate Authority".
GeoTrust bought Equifax certificate services in 2001. Back to Top

What encryption level do your certificates support?
Our SSL certificates support industry-standard 128/256-bit encryption (256-bit available with recent server and client software), so your connections are secured to the same level as major financial institutions and internet companies. Back to Top

Do you sell "chained root" certificates?
"Chained Root" certificates are issued by companies who don't have their Root CA certificate included with web browsers and devices.
Essentially, they "piggy-back" or "chain" their root to another company's, whose Root CA certificate is trusted by most web browsers and devices.

This adds steps to and can complicate the installation process, is not supported by all servers, and can sometimes cause issues with usage.

All of our certificate products, including RapidSSL, are "single root" certificates that are already trusted by customer browsers and devices. Back to Top

Can your certificates be installed on multiple servers?
For the RapidSSL and QuickSSL / QuickSSL Premium certificates, one certificate may not be used on multiple servers.

You should purchase one certificate for each server you are planning to install the certificate on.
Note: We are planning to offer "wildcard" certificates in the near future, which will offer this functionality with just one certificate. Back to Top

Do your certificates include website "seals" or logos I can display?
Yes, they do.

RapidSSL offers a simple static image:
Secured by RapidSSL

GeoTrust QuickSSL certificates include a dynamically generated time-date stamp.
Secured by GeoTrust
Sample only.
The real site seal will have the current date/time.

Do you provide a money-back guarantee?

We provide added customer service and support, an easier ordering process, and quite frankly, you just can't beat the price.
In addition, all of our certificates are fully backed by their respective companies, including reissuance, money back guarantees, and e-mail/phone support.
The only thing that's less is the price! Back to Top

How do I buy on behalf of a client, without them seeing "Revolution Hosting"?
We value the business of other web hosts/resellers/consultants, and don't market our services to your certificate customers.

All of our approval e-mails are unbranded, and come directly from RapidSSL/GeoTrust.
Simply order in your name with your contact information for administrative, billing and technical contacts.
You can then let your client know to follow the instructions in the certificate approval e-mail, and they won't receive any communication from Revolution Hosting. Back to Top

Can I contact you if I have any questions?

Our SSL certificate ordering process should walk you through every step and prompt you for the correct information as needed.
However, it may help to have some of the information prepared beforehand.

You should have:
  • Selected the appropriate certificate for your needs
  • Verify that you have access to install SSL certificates for your website (or contact your web host if you're unsure)
  • Generate your CSR (Certificate Signing Request) with the correct domain name (also known as Common Name)

  • For GeoTrust certificates (QuickSSL and QuickSSL Premium), you should have access to a touch-tone telephone for the phone verification
  • Prepare an accepted payment method
